Learn how to use create an infinite number of white balance cards and print them out instead of spending $45 or more for a set of white balance cards or also known as WarmCards.

Step 1

First, go to File> New to create a new document and create a 6×4 inch image or pick a size that you want your white balance cards to be.

Then, go to Layer> New Fill Layer> Solid Color.

Step 3

You should now see a color picker that will let you pick a color. Simply type in 50% in the HSB brightness field to get a 50% gray.

Now you have a gray card. But if you want to add a custom tint to your photos, follow the rest of this tutorial. Before we add a tint, we need to preview what it will look like. First, go to File> Place and place a photo into the document.

Now go to Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Photo Filter and pick an effect that you would like.

Step 6

Go to Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Invert. This will create an Invert layer on the top to invert the color. Why do you want an inverted color? Because when you use this card to set the white balance in your camera, it will think that it’s has too much of, for example, blue and add more orange to the final image.

Final Results

Now hide the layer with the photo, print the image out, and bring it along with you next time you go take pictures. Simply point your camera at the card and capture the white balance.
